Phonics is one of the most mislabeled skills out there. People seem to think that it’s the easiest thing in the world to teach, which could be true if it’s taught correctly. Check out some of my phonics examples in the video to see what I mean.
Sadly, a lot of teachers are teaching these phonics examples in the wrong way…and you may be too.
If you are teaching your child that sounding out the word “cat” entails saying, “cuh aaaaaaaa tuh,” you may want to watch this video to avoid repeating this mistake.
Now, don’t get me wrong; children can still learn how to read even with this mistake. But for many students, phonics becomes a much slower and sometimes more difficult process when this happens. When was the last time you enjoyed something that was slow, painful, and difficult? Unfortunately, that’s how a lot of students feel about reading.
The next time you hear someone ask, “What is phonics?”, you’ll be able to answer confidently on what it is..and isn’t.
